Almost any kind of organic matter may be used as manure, but some kinds are better than
others. Organic manures vary widely in the amount of plant nutrients that they contain. Some are
more concentrated than others.
Compost is one of the less concentrated organic manures, but it is
extremely valuable in adding extra body to soils especially the sandy soils.
Organic manures
which break down or decay quickly are available to the plant faster than those which decay
slowly (Boller and Hani, 2004). In these study four types of manures namely Seaweed, Cow
dung, Vermi Compost and Coir waste were used.

MAJOR SOURCES OF ORGANIC MANURES:

 Cattle shed wastes-dung, urine and slurry from bio gas plant.
 Slaughterhouse wastes, bone meal, meat meal, blood meal, horn and hoof
meal, fish wastes.
 By products of agro industries- oil cakes, and press mud, fruit and vegetable
processing wastes etc.
 Crop wastes- sugarcane trash, stubbles and other related materials.
 Water hyacinth, weeds and tank silt, and green manure crops and green leaf
manuring material.
 Human habitation wastes, human urine, town refuse, sewage and sludge,
poultry litter, droppings of sheep and goat.

ADVANTAGES OF ORGANIC MANURE:

1) In addition to releasing nutrients, it improves soil structure.
2) Increases water holding capacity.
3) Slow in action hence very difficult to over fertilize plants.
4) No risk of forming toxic built up of chemicals.
5) Renewable, biodegradable, eco-friendly.

DISADVANTAGES OF ORGANIC MANURE:

1)Slow inaction, microbes required to release nutrients microbes require
moisture, so seasonal variation may affect.
2)Nutrient ratios are unknown
